Augmented Music: A case study
The music industry is in trouble. Sales are falling despite innovations such as digital music stores and direct streaming solutions. Here we present a new approach to music recording and distribution, merging Augmented Reality with music distribution. We present an overview of existing mobile solutions in this space and present a case study, an iPhone app designed in collaboration with Matteo Milani and the U.S.O. Project.
The application combines traditional music playback with augmented reality through audio. The idea is to explore the mobile app as a new media for music distribution, a media that can blend traditional music playback with interaction by allowing the user to choose between passive listening and an active composition. The approach has great potential for making mobile software applications become a key in the digital music economy.
